Sewing Update

Tuesday, December 14, 2010

Remember way back when where I posted about starting to sew a skirt? Well I've actually had the mock up sitting on my dress form for a while and I finally decided to get on with it and make the actual skirt.

After a night spent wrapping presents, a glass or two of wine, and watching The Holiday (love that movie), I took the muslin skirt apart and used it as a pattern for the actual fabric.

I'm hoping to finish it tomorrow so I can wear it to the Nutcracker on Thursday. Pictures of the finished product to come!

Skirts

I've been looking for the perfect tulip skirt forever, but I have this specific idea in my head of what I want it to look like and so far my search has been in vain. I realized a while ago that if I wanted exactly what I envisioned, I would have to make it. The problem is, usually when I get these kind of ideas I have a very precise style and fabric in mind, and more often than not I can never find the fabric I'm looking for. The local sewing shops never have the type of material I need and sometimes even the internet fails me. (Anyone know where I can find an indigo blue ikat printed material to make chair covers with?) So last week after work when I stopped by JoAnn Fabrics just to look (not expecting to find anything at all) not only did they have the exact fabric I wanted in the precise shade I was envisioning, but it was half off! If that's not a sign, I don't know what is. So I bought a yard and a half and I'm going to make a tulip skirt!

I haven't quite figured out how I want the pleats yet - hence the top photo for inspiration - but I know I want pockets and possibly an elastic back because I'm all about comfort. The fabric itself is a dusty rose-ish pink and is a moleskin so it has a little bit of a nap, which will make it a great winter/early spring skirt.

I have to say, I'm pretty excited about sewing again. I really haven't designed and sewn anything in a while, and I've been doing this for 7-8 years now. Want to see a blast from my past? The first thing I ever sewed way back in 2003.

It was a costume. Don't laugh.
